Don't visit in winter. Very good chance it will be under water, or sludge after the River Ouse floodwaters have receded. Bearing that in mind, YCC and the keepers do a pretty good job of maintaining the park. The park was created in memory of employees of Rowntree's who died in the First World War, and was opened on 16 July 1921 by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. Upon their purchase in 1919, the 17 acres of land cost £1,500. The park now covers an area of 25 acres, with it being extended in 1926/7 with the purchase of Clementhorpe allotments, and further in 2000 with the purchase of Butcher Terrace football fields. The gates at the riverbank entrance are eighteenth-century and were given by the company as a memorial to the people of York who died in the Second World War. Bishopthorpe Palace is situated along the beautiful River Ouse south of the city centre of York. It's the official home of the Archbishop of York, and has been for all previous Archbishop's of York since 1241. Whilst the inside of the palace is only open for pre-arranged tours with quite a long waiting list, you can still admire the palace and its beautiful gatehouse from the footpath outside.

Quiet cycle path near Escrick

Quiet cycle path from Selby to York

Sustrans have been doing loads of work resurfacing the path here over the last couple of years. Most of the bumpy sections have been removed, which makes for a much smoother ride!

Well known and popular brewery in Tadcaster. You can take a tour or just marvel at the building from the outside.

There is a small free car park at Tadcaster just over the bridge by the bus station. If you go there early it’s a good starting place/end place for a variety of rides.

As others have said this is a nice track away from busy roads and meanders through some great country side

This bridge has been re-built four times! In 1154 the original bridge collapsed with a large crowd on it, waiting to welcome Archbishop William to York. Although many were injured falling into the river and hit by falling debris, no one was killed. A six-arched bridge replaced it, lined with houses, shops, a toll booth, courthouse, prison and St William’s Chapel. The first public toilets in the country were installed on this bridge in 1367. Some 200 years later, winter flooding caused its partial collapse. The third bridge was built higher, giving increased access to more river traffic. The structure existed until the early 19th century, when the corporation replaced it with the New Ouse Bridge in 1821.

You can get in for free if you're a York resident by showing a valid York Card or a formal document with your address on (e.g. driver's licence).
