It divides Italy from France, and the Maritime Alps National Park from the Mercantour National Park. It can be reached from the Italian side, via an easy mule track in two hours from the Piano del Praiet.

The ascent beyond the Refuge of Nice is characterized initially by the Lake of Fous and later by several small glacial lakes. After the Baisse du Basto, you pass another body of water before seeing the imposing Lac du Basto for the first time. The Vallée des Merveilles is also characterized by numerous lakes, although these are mainly reservoirs around the Refuge des Merveilles.

The Nice refuge is located at 2,232 meters above sea level, in the town of Bélvédère, Alpes-Maritimes, in the Mercantour National Park.

As lovely as this lake is, it’s not busy with people even during the summer, so a great place to stop for a quite lunch if you have been taking it easy from refuge des Merveilles

Abri de Fenestre, former Italian army casemate, a little below a blockhouse. It is common to come across numerous chamois and ibexes, as well as marmots on this climb, and even sometimes ibexes in the blockhouses.
