The Portreath Branch Line of the Hayle Railway. Portreath's second tramway, the branch line opened in 1837. It was always steam hauled and terminated in the famous 1:10 incline at Portreath. Coal was hauled up and empty wagons lowered simultaneously by a stationary steam engine at the top. It was always horse drawn to the harbour. There is no public access at present but it is hoped to open it up as a footpath in the future.

South Wheal Francis is a historic tin and copper mine located in Cornwall, notable for its impressive engine house and rich mining heritage. It was a hub of industrial activity during the 19th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Cornish mining landscapes.

The stretch of coast path between Portreath and Porthtowan is often quieter than other areas in Cornwall, but is no less beautiful. With car parking, bus stops, public toilets and cafes at both coastal villages, a run between the two is the perfect way to explore.

Portreath has an inner and outer harbour. The harbour was historically an important port and was one of the earliest industrial ports in Cornwall. Cornwall's first railway, the Portreath Tramroad, linked the harbour to the mines in Scorrier and St Day. Close to the harbour entrance is a white circular hut which is located on a raised section of cliff. This hut is known as 'Dead Man's Hut' and was initially the Harbour Master's lookout. The name originates from when the hut was used as a temporary morgue for bodies washed ashore.

Here the walk leaves the quiet lanes, crosses a more busy road and joins the Devoran-Portreath cycle trail, so take care crossing the road and prepare to see some more people on bikes.

We walked this route after heavy rain and you can see from the photos that in places there was a lot of water in the lane we had to pass. thankfully there were grass verges we could walk along.

A mile or so of beautifully smooth gravel. Pure joy to ride. Good for all seasons. Doable on a road bike with care

I climbed this after a wrong turn on West Kernow Way but I'm glad I did!

The path down from Pennance Road to Pennance Terrace was very uneven and overgrown. We should have used the bridle path a bit further along Pennance Road.

Just south east of Redruth, Carn Marth hill has a summit reaching 771 feet (235 m). Once heavily quarried for granite, there's a large pool near the top which can be eerie in cloud and stunning sunshine. From the summit, enjoy rather extravagant views in every direction, particularly of Cornwall's western coastline. The hill also has an amphitheatre, frequently showing wonderful performances from local and touring groups.
