Fantastic Scenery, Even Better on A Sunny Day

The top section is great coming down after Fyfield Common, but the descent down into Avebury is tricky even on a mtb. Once you reach the farm it's been absolutely destroyed by 4x4s and tractors. So good luck. This type of track is my least favourite part of "official" cycling trails. They just whack the signage up and don't do any restoration or introduction of bylaws to prevent offroad vehicles from using them, restricting enjoyment for other users. It's not like there aren't miles and miles of offroad byways around here which could be legislated for multi-use and non-motorised use.

This stunning valley is a great example of what makes the Cotswolds so special. Until committing to the travelling the length of bridleway you wouldn't know it exists, with no road running through it. The valley has steep sides lined with broad-leaved trees giving it a remote feeling. In the summer the sun sets at the bottom of the valley, blanketing the land in a warm glow.

The views on this descent are fantastic with the Severn estuary and even welsh hills on a clear day. The descent starts out on fast non-technical open grassland and finishes with some fast singletrack.

This is a lovely walk through serene countryside between Tresham and Alderley. A wide bridleway will lead you through rolling green hills dotted with sheep and trees and epic views down the valley.

Decent Food in the Avebury Community Shop

I agree with other comments this is a very slippery path when wet. I lost control a few times but was going slow enough to avoid serious damage.

The woods bit is always great, but the second bit around the fields can get muddy in winter and overgrown in summer. Spring is your best bet.

Great climb. Save your energy as it goes on for a while, getting progressively steeper. There's a brief respite about 80% of the way up, but the final 50m are a killer!

Even in dry weather, the track is quite rutted between Avebury and Wroughton, so you don't cover the mileage so fast. That isn't a problem, except had accommodation deadlines at the other end. I took country lanes between the Ridgeway, dropping down to Wroughton then skirting Swindon before riding nice country lanes ( including Bishopstone )on the way to Uffington, it's pubs and it's White Horse. I cycles parallel to the King Alfred Trail, but 3/4 mile north , so fairly level with the contours with good views, but able to get to my accommodation in time !

The bridleway is called Steps Lane and runs through the Gatcombe Estate. The steep bit of the climb at the bottom is mainly tarmac and then 50m of steep rough stuff then fairly flat. The track going up leads towards Minchinhampton Common which has some excellent riding.

Webb's Wood, just to the west of Swindon, is a Forestry England-owned woodland with two main bridleways running through it. It's a peaceful place, popular with dog walkers and good for spotting woodland wildflowers, birds and butterflies.

A nice steady climbs with a few steep bits to battle with, but the views are worth the effort
