Lindau's harbor entrance is known far beyond the city limits: The Bavarian Lion and the New Lighthouse stand majestically against an impressive panorama of the Alps and Lake Constance. The city's landmark is considered the most beautiful harbor entrance on all of Lake Constance. The six-meter-high lion, which gazes attentively across the lake, is the work of Munich professor Johann von Halbig. It is made of Kelheim sandstone and weighs approximately 50 tons. The Roman numerals "MDCCCLVI" are inscribed on the lion's base – they indicate the year the structure was completed: 1856. The New Lighthouse is 36 meters high and has a base circumference of 24 meters. It is one of the few buildings of its kind to have a clock built into its facade. Climb the 139 steps to the top and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from the observation deck.
