Great viewpoint gor the river Wye and Goodrich castle.

Around 2016 Stowfield Viaduct (known also as Black Bridge) closed as it had become unsafe. This was sad news indeed as the old railway bridge formed part of the Wye Valley Walk. It has now been reopened for walkers only by utilising the scaffolding that was used to render it safe to boaters that passed underneath.

Quite a local landmark hereabouts, especially if you are on the river. An ancient crossing point that has been about in one way or another since roman times. An important bridge connection on the Wye that at one stage was tolled. Failure to pay the toll made you liable to a £5 fine. Some things have never changed!

Goodrich is a village in south Herefordshire, England close to Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean, situated near the River Wye at grid reference SO574193. It is known for its Norman and mediaeval castle built with Old Red Sandstone. The village of Goodrich grew up next to Goodrich Castle, a 'Marcher Castle' dating to c. 1101 which stands on a high spur of land commanding a strategic position above Kerne Bridge, an ancient crossing point of the Wye. The population of the Civil Parish at the 2011 census was 550. Source: Wikipedia

Flanesford Priory was an Augustinian priory in Herefordshire, England. Sir Richard Talbot, then owner of nearby Goodrich Castle, founded the priory in 1346 as a house of the Canons Regular of St Augustine. The priory church was dedicated to St John the Baptist and Sir Richard Talbot was buried there on his death. Weakened by the Black Death, the priory was one of the first to succumb at the Dissolution of the Monasteries. After it was dissolved in 1537, ownership was granted to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. On his death in 1590 the property passed to his son Gilbert, who died in 1616 without a male heir. The Priory buildings were then used as farm buildings until 1980, when they were converted into self-catering holiday apartments. The surviving priory buildings, in particular the refectory building, are Grade I listed. The refectory building, consisting originally of two storeys, is constructed of squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings but with a 20th-century roof. Internally it has been modified over the years for farming purposes and latterly for accommodation. Source: Wikipedia
