The remnants of a much bigger forest, high on a hill. Very atmospheric place.

The few miles between Burrington and Downton are beautiful, the hills being an extension of the south Shropshire hills. They are substantial with plenty of tree cover along their ridges.

The farm house at Burrington Farm is a magnificent and imposing building.

St Georges at Burrington is now closed and is up for sale, possibly for conversion to a house! At present it is closed off with builder's fencing.

Very impressive and wonderfully situated manor house.

You do get a view of the distant Welsh Hills from the summit, but you need to stand on the bench to get a good view as the trees are starting to grow and block it out.

Having walked along a broad track, the way takes a right fork onto a less defined path. You need to take this right fork as it does lead directly to the summit.

Close to the summit of High Vinnalls there is a fine view to the east, towards the distant Brown Clee and Titterstone Clee hills. When you emerge from the trees you do hit thick bracken, and it is easier to head right and onto open land, before doubling back along a good path to get to the true summit.

Although originally made up of ancient royal chases and deer parks, the forest we see today was largely planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1920s. It was named after the Mortimer Family, Norman Lords who held power over the region for some 300 years.

January 2022. Fog and ice, but the routes off the forest road can be boggy. Wear gaters and waterproof boots with deep cleats if you decide to go ‘off road’!

St. George, Burrington. A mostly Victorian rebuilt church of 1864, with a spire. It is in a very pretty setting. At the east end are eight cast iron grave slabs dating from the early 17th century. They are rare examples of early ironwork. They were made during the period when iron was worked at Downton Gorge.

High Vinnalls is the highest point in Mortimer Forest at 1,230 feet (375 m) and is considered part of the Shropshire Hills family, despite being in North Herefordshire. It rewards hikers with a massive vista of wild Mid Wales to the west, as well as a tick for Marilyn baggers. The Mortimer Trail, a 30-mile (48 km) hike from Ludlow to Kington, passes over the summit.

Straddling the border between Herefordshire and Shropshire is Mortimer Forest. It's an invigorating place to walk, with enchanting, hilly trails and plenty of wildlife. The forest reaches its highest point on the Marilyn summit of High Vinnalls at 1,230 feet (375 m). Once an ancient hunting forest, the majority of the trees here today were planted in the 1920s by the Forestry Commission. There are various circular trails through the forest representing varying degrees of difficulty.

A small village in the rural far north of Herefordshire, Burrington dates back to when the manor was held by Eadric the Wild. There are various legends surrounding Eadric, who led the English resistance against the Norman Conquest. The village's church, St George, contains probably the most refined collection of 17th and 18th-century cast iron grave slabs in the England.

A nice viewpoint but an unmarked top to one of England's Marilyns.
