Just downstream of Downton Castle, the Teme runs through a winding wooded section, and there are a few open views such as this one.

The view up to the castle from the bridge over the river Teme shows how imposing the place is, up on the hillside overlooking the Teme Valley. It is an 18th Century mock castle manor house, built on the fortune of one of the Industrial revolution Ironmasters who owned Bringewood Ironworks just downstream from here.

The gorge was formed by the river Teme forcing its way through a limestone ridge, and you can see the limestone where is forms the river bed below the bridge.

The magnificent bridge marks the end of the Downton Gorge, and you can just about get a view of both the bridge and the castle. The gorge is not open to the public unfortunately so this is as close as you can usually get.

Crestign this ridge you get a spectacular view of Downton Castle in the distance, and the extensive 'Tilio-Acerion' ravine forest that is Downton Gorge. This forest is one of the last remaining parts of the ancient Royal Chase of Bringewood.

This shows the winding nature of the Teme in these parts, plus it is the only crossing point for some distance in both directions.

This fine old bridge across the Teme has open space and benches, so is a grand spot for a picnic.

The first hill of the day gives a fine view across the Teme valley.

The Forestry Commission is creating a new wood in the valley and it plans to open up a ride adjacent to the road which would be good when it happens; I'll post it. When you leave the lane to rise up the left hand side of a field, you'll see a dwelling on the left and the OS map will show the path running up through the garden. This is not the case now-follow the diversion signs up to a kissing gate above the property on the left. Once through the gate go right.

There's a railway station at Bucknell about 3 minutes walk past the Sitwell Arms pub, and the Celtic X48 bus calls at the station too(timetable is valid until December 2025) There's also the 738/740 Minsterley Motors bus to and from Knighton/Ludlow via Leintwardine with a very helpful regular driver.

Some recent felling of the pines have created some great viewpoints on the walk up through the woods. The autumnal colours are amazing! It’s worth the detour up to the viewpoint at the top of Hopton Tittershill - you can see great views of the Long Mynd, Caer Caradoc, the Wrekin and the Roaches.

Hopton Woods is a gorgeous woodland located near Hopton Castle with a network of walking trails. As you walk around, you'll be afforded wonderful elevated views of the surrounding Shropshire countryside. Do beware of bikes as this is a popular location for mountain bikers.

Hopton Castle refers to a village and a castle of the same name, hidden in the rolling Shropshire countryside between Craven Arms and Knighton. The castle itself has been a ruin since the 18th century, and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to wander around. Grade I listed, it's looked after by the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust, which has overseen recent restoration work and an appearance on Time Team in 2010.

Sun Inn is well worth a visit as its one of Englands last parlour pubs. In new ownership with new bar, but the original parlour and bar are still there.
