Garway hill is one of the real highlights of the Herefordshire Trail, a proper hill with very fine views in all directions, and ponies!

12월 11, 2025, Path with a Stream Running Through It
I appreciate that during dry weather this won't be a problem, but after recent rain it was still a surprise to find a woodland path that was actually a stream, and a stile was set across that stream!

12월 11, 2025, Church of St Mary and St David
The Romanesque church of St Mary and St David is slightly off route but well worthy of a detour. It is very old and has amazing carvings. Details can be found here - https://kilpeckchurch.org.uk/

12월 11, 2025, Kilpeck Castle
There isn't much left of Kilpeck Castel, but there is enough to give you a sense of its situation and what it must have been like. It does offer fine views to the north, south and west, and would have dominated the village. Incidentally the photos of the carvings come from the nearby church, not the castle.

12월 8, 2022, Higgins' Well
Hidden a quiet part of Little Birch village, the brickwork of Higgins' Well dates from the early 19th century. Some improvements were added later, including a large pool as an animal trough for use during Victoria's diamond jubilee. Higgins Well has long been an important and unfailing supply of water for the village. A local legend about the well, as told on http://www.visitoruk.com/Hereford/little-birch-C592-V11335.html runs as follows: "The original outlet for the waters of the well was in a meadow at the top of the steep bank which rises above the present well. The owner of this meadow became so annoyed at the trespasses of the villagers across his land to the well that he had it filled up. However, shortly afterwards, while smoking his pipe in the great chimney corner of his house, he was startled by a sudden eruption of water under his feet." "To his untutored mind, the waters forcing this new outlet were a sign that the guardian spirit protecting the local people's rights was asserting itself. To appease this spirit, but determined not to reopen the well, he moved down to the present site and started to dig. In due course water began to bubble up through the underlying rock and, miraculously, the inrush in the chimney corner disappeared. The water spirit was obviously satisfied that water was once again made available to the people. This "act of contrition" resulted in local immortality for Mr Higgins."

Note for dog walkers - there are sheep and horses present, so dogs need to be kept on lead.

Below the gentle slopes of the surrounding hills, Kentchurch is a lovely village by the River Monnow in Herefordshire. According to some, it was the home of the legendary Jack o' Kent, a popular bogeyman figure in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire folklore. The Bridge Inn does excellent food. The historic Kentchurch Court is a Grade I-listed building that dates back to the 14th century. It has seen many revamps, not least in the late 18th century when it was given a gothic remodelling by John Nash.

2월 3, 2021, Kilpeck Church and Castle Ruins
Nestled in classic border country, Kilpeck is a pleasant Herefordshire village. Part of the Welsh Kingdom of Ergyng until the 9th century, it became part of Archenfield after the Norman conquest. In the 16th century it became part of England, though Welsh was still commonly spoken here until the 19th century. It is notable for two landmarks in particular: the remains of a motte-and-bailey caste and its small but remarkable Romanesque church of St Mary and St David's.

2월 3, 2021, Wormelow Tump
Wormelow is a village in Herefordshire with strong links to Arthurian legend. Also known as Wormelow Tump, the tump refers to a mound that was said to be the grave of King Arthur's son Amr. However, the tump was flattened to widen the main road in 1896. It is part of the parish of Much Dewchurch, a neighbouring village to the north west. Here is the Grade I-listed St David's Church, boasting a distinctive square tower.

A little hike up another English Marilyn that is quite a pretty walk with a trig pointed summit atop a wooded Iron Age Fort.
