1월 27, 2026, Ross-on-Wye Market House

Fabulous and iconic Sandstone building, centrepiece of Ross on Wye.

This unusual and eyecatching church up on it's hill dominates the village of Hoarwithy, and it's most spectacular feature is the Italianate tower.

According to Harper Bridges - This bridge was commissioned by the congregations of the churches of Sellack Boat and King’s Caple and built in 1895. The towers are of tubular cast iron, with nameplate transoms embossed “Louis Harper AIMCE, Maker, Aberdeen”. The original cables to common anchorages are still in place, as are their hangers. However, at some stage (nobody seems to know when or why) further short cables were clamped to the original, presumably to support areas of wear and avoid cable replacement. This has led to crowding at the saddles. However, the bridge is still used and the local churches continue to hold their ‘Bridge Thanksgiving’ ceremony each year. This area is noted for its flooding but so far the bridge has held since the arched deck remains above the flow, although the approaches are inundated. It lacks the original longitudinal deck boarding but the original camber is well maintained. This bridge is the best illustration of the method of attachment of hangars to main cable employed by John and Louis Harper

Lovely little church that is typical of the small village churches in Herefordshire with its small square tower. As is usual, it has a few fine Yew Trees in the graveyard.

As you climb out of Ross (or descend towards it), you get a fine view of the town from Brampton Street, especially when there is a slight mist in the air.

You can see the remains of the railway bridge pillars which look as if they should be part of the old town walls or a castle. There are good information boards that give a lot of detail of the railway and life back then.

A lovely little town built on hilly ground so the streets go up and down, with the Market Hall on stilts in a prominant location.

The River Wye meanders into Ross-on Wye under the busy A449. The Wye Valley Walk follows this stretch of the river bank on its 138 mile (222 km) from the source of the river to the Bristol Channel.

Great stopping point and a hub for rides in all directions. Plenty of coffee shops

Nestled by the River Wye, Ross-on-Wye is a charming market town. Originating from the first travel guidebook by William Gilpin in 1782, it inspired picturesque tourism. It has independent stores, 19th-century mock-Gothic walls, a Gazebo Tower folly, and colourful homes cascading down the hillside to the river.

St Mary's was founded as a Benedictine priory in 1075 but what remains today dates mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The church, which is Grade II-listed, has some wonderful stained glass windows from the 1880s.

Foy and Hole-in-the-Wall are two villages near Ross-on-Wye that are actually split by the River Wye. Foy is on one side and Hole-in-the-Wall is on the other. In times gone by crossing from one part to the other was only possible by ferry or ford but in 1876 a suspension bridge was built and a very pretty one it is too.

Perched above the River Wye, Ross is a pretty market town that played a significant role in nature tourism's history. In 1770, William Gilpin started organising boat trips down the Wye. Some believe that this was the very origin of the Picturesque Movement, leading people to appreciate the natural world and its beauty. Ross has a lot to offer the hiker. Gateway to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, it is also within easy driving distance of the Brecon Beacons, the Cotswolds and the Malverns.

Haugh Woods Butterfly Trails are two short trails that meander the ancient woodland of Haugh Woods. The trails have been set up by Forestry England to allow everyone to enjoy the numerous butterflies and moths that live here. This is an important site for UK butterflies (we are in short supply!) and this woodland gives nearly 350 hectares or 850 acres for them to breed. There are about over 600 of both species living here!

Kate Humble the Tv presenter once said 'The Wye Valley Walk passes through this beautiful part of the world which I am lucky enough to call home. Don’t rush the walk.' No truer words have been said. The Wye Valley, by foot or canoe, is as good as it gets anywhere.

Lea & Pagets Wood is arguably one of the finest ancient woodlands in the Hereford and Wye Valley area. Springtime sees large carpets of bluebells making a spectacular appearance and the whole area becomes an important eco system for the local butterfly population especially white admirals and wood whites.

If walking outside the wood with dogs beware not all styles are easily passable and are a high step over
