Atienza enjoyed great importance during much of the Middle Ages until the fifteenth century. This town was one of the most important Muslim squares and later one of the most loyal to the Castilian kings during the noble wars that plagued Castile and their loyalty made it a refuge for numerous monarchs. Starting in the 15th century, it lost its status as a border town and its commerce was diminished until the siege of Constable Álvaro de Luna ended up irreparably reducing it.

The Castillo de Atienza, like so many fortifications in the border area between the Moors and the Spaniards, was in rather unstable ownership. From the 9th to the 11th century it was part of the Moorish defense lines south of the Duero and was considered an almost impregnable fortress.
