The mountain village of Baske Oštarje is the starting point for hikes in the mountain region of Velebit. You reach the village after a short winding ride on a pass and 900 meters from Karlobag. For those who want to see and experience something completely different to the beach holiday, it is worth a day trip with a hike or a stay of several days. There are hostels and a campsite I can only recommend. The trek up the ridge over several small grassy summits is easy and can be done up to the cross at Ljubičko brdo for each of the 300 meters of altitude on steep mountain trails. The trail starts at the church in Basque Oštarje and rises from the southeast through Buchenwald. Those who are sure-footed and have no problems with short climbs can simply follow the path at the summit of Ljubičko brdo. Then it goes on to the next rock summit and down into the forest on a gravel road. From there back to Baške Ostarje.
