There were two gates leading to the town of Mělník, but only this late Gothic gate from around 1500 has survived. On the west wall there used to be an astronomical clock with a dulcimer. The tower is one of the highest places in Mělník open to the public and from its fifth floor you can see the whole town and its surroundings. Today there is a gallery and a café inside.

The Gothic tower of the Prague Gate is the oldest surviving part of the medieval city fortifications. The current shape of the tower's body dates from 1536. The narrow slotted windows and key-shaped loopholes still testify to these turbulent times. The tower also served as a prison, later a reservoir was built here, from which water drawn from the Pšovka river was distributed to the city fountains. In the 1960s, academic painter Vladimír Veselý built an original art gallery here. The Prague Gate still serves the fine arts today. Visitors to the Ve Věž gallery and cafe can admire the works of contemporary young artists and renowned artists, as well as a unique view of the city from the windows of the highest, fifth floor of the tower
