The Kalkensemeersen nature reserve is beautiful

A V1 crashed here in Kalken during World War II. This monument commemorates this tragic event, in which two children lost their lives. A piece of wreckage from the aircraft is displayed on the monument.

The Kalkenvaart is a waterway between the village of Kalken and the Scheldt River. It runs through the Kalkense Meersen nature reserve and is very popular with anglers, hikers, and cyclists. A wide cycle and walking path runs alongside the canal. Since its dredging in 2022, the Kalkense Vaart has been very clean. You can cross the canal via the Roerdompbrug (Broedomp Bridge) and/or watch for fish swimming by.

The peace of nature

1944. The V1 bomb, the feared German weapon of war, fired from the Netherlands, also caused death and destruction in Kalken. In addition to the two deceased playmates, there were also a few (seriously) injured and the damage in the area was enormous. “The swallow lift is a 6-metre-high mast with artificial housing at the top,” says Robin Van Heghe of Regionaal Landschap. “It is a lift especially for the house martin. Roof overhangs have been placed at the top, with artificial nests, on which they can make their own mud nest. The location at the Vaartplein is ideal, because the swallows can find enough insects above the damp grasslands in the Kalkense Meersen.” (Vrtnws)

You can walk on the Scheldedijk, but also on the unpaved field path below that runs along the dike. It is quieter there on busy days.
