2월 9, 2026, View of Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve

The area currently known as the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve once contained a saltwater basin connected to the sea, which for centuries provided a significant economic source, ensuring the livelihood of the surrounding areas thanks to fishing, the fish trade, and the supply of salt. This enormous "piscaria" or fishpond, on which the castle stood, later became the toponym of the town, called Castiglione della Pescaia. Over the centuries, the Prile initially lost its salinity (the lake was declared a freshwater pond in 1386) and then gradually dried up, forming the marshy basins that characterize the wetland.

On April 18, 2024, I tried to do this tour, but it was completely futile. Either the paths were inaccessible due to gates with locks and chains, or they were so overgrown that it would have been difficult to walk at best. It's a shame that the community doesn't support this beautiful tour better.

Located in the enchanting natural reserve of Isola Clodia, the area is home to ancient Roman remains and the remains of the Abbey of San Pancrazio al Fango, built on a Roman villa. Among the ruins, the sides and semicircular base of the apse can be partially seen, with sandstone filaretto walls and travertine ashlars.

Visit this magical place at first light in the morning or at sunset and bring a spotting scope or binoculars with you: this is paradise for birdwatchers! The vegetation in the Reserve, influenced by natural factors and human interventions, presents a rich variety. From marsh reed to elms, willows, tamarisks and white poplars, each species contributes to creating a unique environment. The pine forest, on the sandy tombolo, is characterized by imposing stone pine plants and an undergrowth rich in rockroses and rosemary.

The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, spread over 1,273 hectares between Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto, represents the last vestige of the Castiglione Marshes, subjected to reclamation works by the Lorraine family in the eighteenth century. Classified as a "wetland of international importance" according to the Ramsar Convention, it is a key area for Tuscan birdlife.

From Casa Rossa Ximenes you can undertake a ring of approximately 13 kilometers in what was once Lake Prile, a large basin in the Grosseto area, of which few traces remain today.

Castiglione della Pescaia, a town of Etruscan origin set on a hill overlooking the sea, intertwines its history with the events of the Etruscans and the Romans. These have left indelible traces of urban wonders: aqueducts, viaducts and paved streets. The medieval heart of the town is dominated by an imposing castle, built around a tower built by the Pisans in the 10th century. Surrounded by walls that embrace the medieval village, made up of ancient houses and towers, the castle stands as testimony to bygone eras. These walls, erected in the 10th century, are composed of the remains of two distinct fortification systems. The initial ring dates back to the 10th-13th century, when Pisa protected the town, while the second wall was built in the 15th century to defend the settlement on the hill. In addition to the castle and the medieval village, the landscape of Castiglione della Pescaia is enriched by the presence of the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, recognized internationally for its rare ecosystem. In 1404, Castiglione della Pescaia came under the protection of Florence, with the Medici undertaking extensive land reclamation efforts to repopulate the area. However, the most significant efforts were made in the decade between 1828 and 1838 under Leopold II, known as Canapone. Today, Castiglione della Pescaia is a renowned seaside destination, famous for its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. The country offers countless opportunities for those passionate about nature, history and culture, making it an ideal retreat for holidaymakers.

you can get to the red house very well with a gravel. Be careful in autumn there is a large presence of flamingos, better to go slowly and enjoy it

Along the cycle path between Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia it is possible to find several areas like this, with benches and bins, to catch your breath in the shade.
