The place name itself, "castelo" is a castle in Galician, and the remains of various buildings found indicate that some type of fortified building was located here. In 2019, remains of oysters, chestnuts and ceramics were found. But the most spectacular discovery was made by a neighbor of the area, who found a cavalry harness pendant from medieval times: a bronze ornament, with a gold bath and enamel finishes of various colors.

Although its origin is quite possibly Roman, the bridge shows many medieval characteristics. The bridge has undergone serious modifications throughout history, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries. Many legends surround the old bridge. In one, the bridge was the meeting place for a gang of thieves who gathered here to "split" the booties. Another is the story of a group of knights who departed from here to other places to fight against the Moors. Another tells us that seven brothers gathered here (Asunción, Lucía, María de la O, Marta, Amaro, Blas and Cibrán) who decided to preach the word of Christ. Their work of preaching and doing good was so great that when they died, seven mountains grew over their bodies. They are honored by seven chapels in area towns (Pesqueiras, Ganade, Picoña, Ribarteme, Lira, Areas, Guláns).

At the top of the hill we find the hermitage of San Nomedio, a simple construction from the beginning of the 20th century that probably replaced another previous temple. They say that below it there is a Roman altar that was covered by thecurrent altar.

The Condado region, is full of Roman buildings, bridges and ruins. The Roman villa found in the parish of Angoares, a short distance from Ponteareas was an active township in its day and has a great deal of historic ruins. It is thought that a Roman road passed through here, perhaps the XIX, on connecting Bracara Augusta (Braga in Portugal) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga).
