A beautiful sight in the old town of Bilbao on the Nivounriver.

The oldest building in the city of Bilbao. The current Gothic church was built on an even older pilgrimage chapel, dating from the time of the pilgrimages in honour of Saint James. The cathedral has three naves with ribbed vaults. Although it was originally built in the Gothic style, the current façade and tower date from the 19th century. The choir and cloister are of extraordinary beauty, the latter a late Gothic work. The crypt is built into the former pilgrimage chapel, whose walls have been incorporated into the building.

The heart of the city of Bilbao has always been the old town, better known as Las Siete Calles. After the floods in 1983, the old town was rehabilitated and is now one of the most important commercial and leisure centres in Bilbao. The pedestrian streets alternate between classic shops and more innovative ones, as well as numerous bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the best of Basque gastronomy. Thousands of visitors flock to the streets every year and any excuse is perfect to enjoy the gastronomic, commercial and cultural offer that the old town has to offer. In its corners you will find the oldest churches and monuments in the city: the Santiago Cathedral, the Church of San Antón, the Archaeological Museum, the Basque Museum, the Bidebarrieta Municipal Library and Plaza Nueva, a place for leisure activities and the setting for numerous games and festivals such as the Sunday Market or the Santo Tomás Market.
