Ledesma still preserves a large part of the granite stone wall that has historically surrounded the entire town. Most of what remains today was built during the reign of Ferdinand II of León in the 12th century, although several sections were renovated in the 15th century with well-hewn stonework.

The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca, from the 18th century, is one of the most beautiful urban monumental squares in Europe. Construction began in 1729 at the request of the mayor Rodrigo Caballero Llanes. The project was led by the architect Alberto de Churriguera, followed by his nephew Manuel de Lara Churriguera and was completed by Andrés García de Quiñones in 1755. Located in the centre of the city, it forms an irregular quadrilateral with arcades, with three floors on each façade, presided over by the Town Hall. In the Royal Pavilion, the effigy of King Ferdinand III The Saint stands out and the medallions on the spandrels of its arches represent Spanish monarchs. In the south pavilion, or San Martín in the medallions we see illustrious military men or conquerors, while in the Petrineros pavilion the figures in the medallions are cultural figures.
