Collection of painted tree stumps, totems, and other artworks after the climb up through the forest, and before you reach the Spanish Civil War monument at the top. There is usually one or two mobile refreshment and gift vendors nearby.

If you book ahead, you could choose to stay in the small bar Albergue Descanso de San Juan, which only has a few beds, but does great pizzas. However most pilgrims choose to stay in the wonderful monastery, which though fairly basic, is quite comfortable.

The abbey complex is a dream: 13th century and really well preserved. Unfortunately, the interior has little spiritual impact due to the latticework and the large burial chamber in the center of the room.

In the middle of this long path through the woods there are two mobile refreshment stations about 1 km apart. If at least one is occupied, everything is fine. And if you miss the first one, you are guaranteed to stop at the second one. Fun, creative and well-fed!

The asphalt reaches right up to this bar with a terrace at the entrance to San Juan de Ortega, so it is a good point to stop along the way and recharge your batteries. In the background you will see the monastery and the church. If you need to finish your stage here, in the town there is a hostel for pilgrims and a rural hotel.

This small hamlet has an average population of just 18 inhabitants, however, it is seen as one of the great landmarks on the French route and as a popular meeting point for many pilgrims. The saint that shares its name, the disciple of Saint Domingo de la Calzada, builder and protector of the ancient route, managed to erect a small church and an important refuge for pilgrims which gave them shelter after the difficult climb up the inhospitable Montes de Oca.
