The Castillo de Villena, also known as Castillo de la Atalaya, is an impressive medieval fortress perched on a hill overlooking the town of Villena in the province of Alicante. It was originally built by the Moors in the 12th century and expanded and remodeled after the Christian conquest in the 13th century. The imposing keep, with its various construction phases, is particularly striking, preserving both Moorish and Christian architectural elements. Throughout its history, the castle has served as a military stronghold, a noble residence, and, at times, a prison. Today, it is a listed historical monument of outstanding cultural interest and is one of the best-preserved castles in the Valencian Community. Visitors can explore the interior, climb the ancient walls, and enjoy the panoramic views over Villena and the Vinalopó Valley, while regular guided tours and cultural events bring the fortress's history to life.
