The oldest part of the church is the rectangular chancel, built in the early 13th century. This part still has four pointed arch windows. There are also two bricked-up priest's entrances in the north and south walls. The chancel is straight and decorated with two closed round-arch windows and three white, climbing round-arch niches in the gable. A buttress was also placed against the chancel to prevent it from sinking. The tower is several decades younger and is characterized by large wall anchors.

The cycle path along the water is beautiful to ride.

Two centuries after Tolbert was founded by colonists, it had a church in a spacious and raised cemetery in 1200. The oldest part of the brick choir dates from 1200, while the base of the tower was built a few decades later. The church got its current shape because the nave was placed between the tower and the choir, giving it a higher roof than the choir. To prevent subsidence, a buttress was placed against the chancel wall.
