The church was built between 1681 and 1685, according to the plans of the Italian architect Antonio Petrini, on the foundations of a previous church and a pagan sacrificial site. The interior of the church was decorated in 1692, with particular attention being given to the ceiling painting, which is a listed building. Great view and a great resting place

In autumn 2019, hard-working helpers from the Bernterode Citizens' Foundation restored the covered pedestrian bridge over the Wipper at the old fire station.

The longest bench in Thuringia to date is no longer this bench in Bernterode, but since April 2023 a bench in Schmalkalden. This is approx. 32 m long. The length of the bench in Bernterode is 26.6 m.
