The Holy Grave of Bernterode was built in 1798 on the Lindey.
Every year on the Feast of the Ascension, a procession led to the Klüschen, which was modeled on the grave of Jesus Christ.
The inscription: “Memento Mori” is intended to remind us that our earthly life will one day come to an end. (The expression "Memento mori" - Latin for "Remember that you are dying" comes from medieval monastic Latin, where it was probably modified from "Memento moriendum esse", i.e. "Remember that you must die". But not only on Ascension Day, but throughout the year people, including from neighboring towns, come to this place, which is always lovingly cared for. Everyone with their own concerns. Candles are lit and prayers are said or the wonderful view is enjoyed.
On March 22, 2015, however, this place of prayer was completely destroyed by an arson attack.
Thanks to the community, donations and the support of Bernteröder companies, "The Holy Grave" was able to be rebuilt in the summer months.
After the dignified and loving redesign, the inauguration took place on October 4, 2015, as part of a prayer service, by Pastor Gellrich and Pastor Mucke. (from information board)
