When the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen wanted to build a port on the sea at the beginning of the 19th century, it purchased an area from the Kingdom of Hanover located 60 kilometers north of its own city limits. Since then, not only a huge port but also a separate city has grown there, which today belongs to the German federal state of Bremen.
