Triste is a town located right next to the Peña reservoir, which draws its water from the Gallego River. The town is surrounded to the north by the Santa Isabel mountain range and to the south by the Loarre mountain range.

A few steps from the hermitage there is a beautiful lookout with beautiful views of the Pyrenees and an interesting view from above of the overhanging wall that was used for the construction of the old monastery of San Juan.

The museum area created on the ruins of the new monastery is very interesting. The reconstruction of the monks' quarters is very impressive.

Short road trip, Jaca, return to San Juan de la Peña

Isaba, also known as Izaba in Basque, is a picturesque village located in the Roncal Valley in the Navarrese Pyrenees, northern Spain. This charming village is known for its rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was a strategic outpost for the Kingdom of Navarre. Isaba offers breathtaking scenery with lush green meadows in spring, colorful autumn leaves and snow-capped mountains in winter.

If it's muddy at the bottom, move up the slope to the road (carry your bike, sigh)

Perfect for taking a break and replenishing water in the fountain before continuing the route. A visit to the nearby Old Monastery of San Juan de la Peña is essential.
