The Torre d'Homenatge is the most striking surviving tower of the Castell d'Alaró on Mallorca. Dating from the early 14th century, it was completed between 1319 and 1320 and served as the main entrance to the castle. It was also the residence of the Castellan, the commander of the fortress. The tower is particularly windy and exposed on the ridge of the castle complex. Hikers who spend a long time there, especially during cool winds from the north or west, are prone to chills. This gave rise to the local joke that one "catches a cold" there, which is why the tower is popularly known as "es Constipador."

Hard to believe: the only means of transport to the refuge! The animals carried every food item up here and brought every piece of rubbish back down again.

Also called "the cold gate" because many sweaty people cool off in the wind under the tower ;-)

From the Puig d' Alaró you have a wonderful view over the mountains of Mallorca. There is a hostel called "Hosteria del Puig d'Alaró" where you can spend the night or just have something to eat. Everything that is needed up here has to be carried up the arduous path, about 1km, to the ruins. This task is taken on by two hard-working donkeys. They trot comfortably up and down, sometimes heavily laden, just as necessary.

When the weather is good, you can enjoy the best views of the mountains and the island from the Castell d' Alaró. There is a small chapel and a small café up here. Drinks, coffee and cake are available. These are brought up by two mules. There is also a toilet here. However, it can only be used when the water reservoir has been filled with rain. If the weather is bad, you can find shelter up here.
