Standing in front of a volcano is quite an experience. A look into the crater is a must!

Located on the southern tip of the island of La Palma, these two lighthouses, like faithful sleepers of the sea, have survived historic volcanic eruptions. The older one was built in 1892 after a long and expensive construction process and began operating in 1903. All materials were brought by ship and even the volcanic stone used for its construction came from a quarry in Arucas, Gran Canaria. Geological phenomena have been on the verge of destroying it several times, such as the earthquakes that preceded the eruption of the San Juan volcano in 1949 and the eruption of the Teneguía volcano in 1971, which damaged the structure of the building as a result of seismic movements. Due to its poor condition, in 1983 it was decided to project the construction of a new tower of approximately 24.15 m, attached to the old lighthouse. In 2006, the old lighthouse was converted to house the Interpretation Center of the Marine Protected Area of the island of La Palma.

A really deep, spectacular crater right on the GR 131 - Ruta de los Volcanos. Interesting to see what shapes the lava formed. You can take really great photos

Hard to believe, but it was only created in 1949. The explosion crater Hoyo Negro was formed during major earthquakes this year. This mainly emitted gases and ash. There was never any lava flow here. Still, more than impressive!

The scenery is indeed breathtaking and highly recommended. The hiking trail leads steadily downhill from the visitor center of the San Antonio volcano in the direction of Faro de Fuencaliente on the southern tip of the island (tip: definitely visit the salt pans - there is a circular route here). Sturdy shoes are mandatory (ideally hiking boots)! Recommended direction of march wg. the slope: down 😀 Bus line 23 ends at Faro and there is a small restaurant and a shop with products from the salt works.

In the meantime, the entrance fees have increased (8€/6€ residents), but it is still very worthwhile.

There are two headlights: the new one is the one with red and white stripes; the old hides the House of the Lighthouse Keeper, which can be visited. Nearby is Echentive beach, one of the youngest beaches on the island, since it was formed in 1971 after the eruption of the Teneguía volcano. Perfect for taking a dip after a long walk! If you end up here after walking the Ruta de los Volcanes from the San Antonio volcano, you can catch a bus that will drop you back at the volcano's visitor center.

This landscape is incredible, it seems that you are walking on the Moon. There is solidified lava everywhere and a penetrating black color as far as the eye can see.

If you want to get to the viewpoint and walk along the edge of the volcano, you have to pay €5 to enter the visitor center. There you will find an exhibition about volcanoes and the island of La Palma. Highly recommended! The views of the volcano are impressive and the exhibition is very interesting.

The Hoyo Negro erupted on June 24, 1949 and did not stop until July 31. It is one of the youngest volcanoes on La Palma. Be careful if you get close to the edge because the stones are loose and it can be dangerous.

You should definitely do the volcano route. However, this is long and difficult if the complete route is committed. You should definitely have 2 liters of water with you.
