By E-bike from Roque de los hombres to the lighthouse, thus expanding the classic volcano route that runs along the GR 131 from the Refugio del Pilar. Make sure if you decide to get a bike with a high capacity battery, in my case I also got an extender and there were no problems. The tour is for experienced people and I assure you that it will be one of the best you will do in your life.
The story goes that on July 15, 1570, the French privateer Jaques Souri commanding the warship "Le Prince" intercepted the galleon Santiago, where Father Fray Ignacio de Acevedo and 39 Jesuit religious were traveling, bound for a mission in Brazil. The French pirates took the ship and cruelly murdered the Jesuits by throwing the bodies of the clerics overboard at "La Punta de Malpique", west of the Fuencaliente lighthouse.
Today Ben Dia is one of the diving spots with the greatest tourist attraction for divers: the crosses of Malpique, a "cemetery" that lies 20 meters deep in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This peculiar cemetery was created in 1999 by sinking 40 impressive stone crosses that represent the 40 Martyrs of Tazacorte, the group of Franciscan monks of Portuguese and Spanish nationality who were thrown over the side of the ship in a pirate attack).
Right next to the lighthouse are the Fuencaliente Salt Flats. It is one of the few in the archipelago that remains active and, curiously, has been declared a Site of Scientific Interest for being the resting place of a multitude of migratory birds.
Its light colors between white and pink create a beautiful contrast with the blue of the Atlantic and the black of the volcanic lava. In addition, it houses the Jardín de la Sal Restaurant with views of the sea and the salt flats where the protagonists are fish, local wines and, of course, salt.
