The Playa de las Catedrales, known in Galician as Praia das Catedrais, is an impressive natural monument located on the coast of the province of Lugo, in Galicia, Spain. Its official name is Playa de Aguas Santas, but it is popularly known as Playa de las Catedrales due to the appearance of its cliffs, which are reminiscent of the arches and vaults of a cathedral.

Las Catedrales beach is a natural monument of extraordinary dimensions. All you have to do is wait for low tide, take off your shoes, start walking... and you'll feel like you're in heaven. There's nothing like enjoying the view of the 30-metre-high flying buttresses, discovering unusual perspectives of arches within other arches. Or simply, letting yourself be carried away by the sandy corridors between slate walls, like in an imposing and whimsical central nave.

Wide leafy central square with palm, benches for taking a rest, surrounded by colorful villas built by emigrants to Cuba and other Latin American colonies.

The cetareas on the coast are facilities that use the natural bays of the sea to keep the shellfish fresh with the sea water. In this way, the farmers of the region were sure of obtaining seafood all year round and were able to get it at a cheaper price even out of season, for example in summer or during the closed season. Majestic nature that more than a forest makes it a jungle. Very cool even in summer. The parts of the tunnels is from an Indiana Jones movie. Very adventurous.

Should *definitely* take a look, but watch the tides. At low tide the various small coves and caves are visible and accessible, unfortunately not at high tide. A ticket is required for access from July to October, which is available here: https://ascatedrais.xunta.gal/monatr/inicio?lang=en is to get. The tide times are also noted here.

From the cycling route you can see this old stone wall that regulates the flow of water and makes it easy to fish on this small cliff.

To understand what makes it so special, you just have to wait for the tide to go out. At that time, you will be able to walk through it and admire the huge stone arches and caves that have formed this extraordinary construction of nature.

Spectacular natural monument located in the geomorphological formation of the Cantabrian Ridge. The rocks, mainly slates and quartzites, have suffered deformations over time due to tectonic movements, as well as the erosion of the wind and water when hitting the coast. In order to fully enjoy this natural wonder, it is advisable to visit it at low tide. It is at this time, when the sea level drops, that you can walk the narrow corridors between the cliffs and caves.

💡 Tip: Be sure to find out the tides before visiting. The beach can only be visited at low tide. When the tide comes in, the landscape changes completely and Playa de As Catedrais hides its treasures under the sea again.

Declared a national monument in 1902, the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption began to be built in 1219 and was consecrated by Bishop Martin in 1242. The transept and sacristy were later made in the Gothic style. Under the ss. XVI and XVII the girola was opened to obtain a greater amplitude and the aisles were extended, and in the XVIII an important change is made to the facade with the construction of two towers of three bodies topped with domes and a section is added to each side of the transept, so it is an amalgam temple of different architectural styles. Rectangular in plan, it consists of three naves, transept, main chapel, rectangular girola and cloister, made of granite masonry and covered with slate. Facade with the primitive Romanesque facade of two archivolts and six columns, central rose window and two Baroque towers on each side, with the figure of San Rosendo Obispo (patron saint of Mondoñedo) at the top. Interior: Rococo main altarpiece, murals, choir, organs and cloister. Also from the inside, at the bottom of the right nave, you can access the Cateration and Diocesan Museum. https://www.turismo.gal/recurso/-/detalle/5579/catedral-de-mondonedo?langId=es_ES&tp=8&ctre=30

The Playa de las Catedrales is about 1300 meters long and is flanked by a long stretch of green rocky coast. In addition to its enormous rocky cliffs, there is another exciting effect that makes the visit a pure thrill. The beach can only be visited at low tide, so that you can experience the natural spectacle up close.
