Today's monastery complex with church, convent buildings, two-storey cloister and palace of Charles V was rebuilt from 1949 on Franco's orders over the medieval and early modern building remains. At the beginning of the 19th century (1809) the historic monastery was destroyed down to its foundations by the French army during the Napoleonic Wars. At the age of 55, Charles V, then the most powerful man in the world, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and King of the Spanish Empire "on which the sun never set", decided to resign his crowns and offices.
