The Plaza Mayor of Alameda de la Sagra is the social and cultural heart of the town, a space that blends tradition and everyday life. Located in the historic center of the town, it is surrounded by charming streets and traditional buildings. It is a meeting point for locals and visitors alike, with bars, restaurants, and shops offering typical cuisine.

By naming this park – with its beautiful green spaces and water areas a popular local recreation area – the city of Mostoles honors a deserving Nobel Peace Prize winner: Nelson MANDELA (born 1918, Nobel Peace Prize 1993, died 2013) dedicated his long life to non-violent resistance against the apartheid policy (racial segregation) in South Africa.

Villanueva de la Cañada was known by the name of Despernada. Due to a contraction of the word, it was later called La Espernada. Several legends circulate about this name: one of them refers to a stone statue, mutilated by passers-by, and which existed in ancient times on the site where the town is built today, and around which the first homes were built. This version is documented in the Topographical Relations of Philip II (1578), the original of which is preserved in the Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Currently Villanueva de la Cañada is a modern town, which houses the Alfonso X El Sabio University (UAX) and in its vicinity is the water park: Aquópolis.

This iron bridge is one of many similar ones that were built in Madrid in the 19th century to cross the course of some of its rivers. It has recently been renovated.
