This gate owes its name to the old mills located outside the fortifications to harness the wind (the "Bel'air," which gave the square its name). It is part of the bastion fortifications built south of the city walls between 1642 and 1647.

The fortifications stretch over 3.5 kilometers with seven gates and twelve towers. From the city walls, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the region.

The gate was built in 1592, was given a barbican in 1620 and was rebuilt in 1750. The gate gave direct access to the markets and was an important passage for trade. The gate has an impressive frieze with gargoyles and a coat of arms with the fleur-de-lys. The gate is a national monument and one of the 20 most beautiful sights around Langres. 😊
