The Castillet or Castellet (in Catalan) is a monument in the city of Perpignan that was in turn the city gate and the state prison. Today it houses the Catalan Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. It was also called at certain times Baluard or Bastilla.

The square is named after François Arago. He was born in Estagel near Perpignan on February 26, 1786 and died in Paris on October 2, 1853. He was an astronomer, physicist and politician. He discovered that iron takes on magnetic properties when exposed to an electric current. François Aragos grew up with eleven siblings, six boys and five girls. He was friends with Alexander von Humboldt and both were interested in the phenomenon of terrestrial magnetism.

The church building was erected in the Gothic style from 1324. Because of the plague, construction was halted in the 14th century and it was only completed in the 16th century. In May 1509 the first mass was read. In 1601 it was elevated to the status of a cathedral.
