Refuge du Pelvoux, perched at 2,704 meters in the heart of the Écrins, offers a warm welcome to hikers and alpinists alike. Whether preparing for an early ascent of Mont Pelvoux (3,946 m) or simply seeking shelter amid breathtaking alpine scenery, this high-altitude hut is a place of comfort and adventure. In 2025, it marks the checkpoint for Stage 3 of Le Pilgrimage Trail.

Balanced on a spectacular rocky bar at the end of the Celse-Nière valley, the Sélé refuge welcomes you in the heart of the Écrins massif. It is a superb meeting point between hikers, alone or with family, and mountaineers who leave for the Ailefroides. This refuge has a capacity of 76 beds and offers traditional catering when it is manned. Reservations are required. Visit the website https://refugedusele.ffcam.fr/

Relatively easy walk but too little variation in the landscape. Also a fairly busy walk and the refuge was full (20/08/24 at 13:00)

In Occitan, the pousterle is a small gate (a postern). It comes from the Latin posterula, which means the back door. This toponym sometimes refers to a pass, which is a gate between two valleys. Glaciers carved out this gate where an arm passed between the glacier that occupied the Fournel valley and the one that flowed into the Vallouise valley.

The pass offers a small wooded plateau from which many hikes and cross-country skiing or hiking trails start. A car park not far away as well as a refuge allow easy access. A rock bar has been converted into a climbing spot for the summer.
