The highest elevation on the Hartmannsweilerkopf, unfortunately also one of the most tragic places on this battlefield. Around the cross there are many trenches, fortresses and fortifications which can also be visited. These tell the sad story of this otherwise beautiful place.

Historical place in the Vosges that was hotly contested during the First World War

Near the Col de Petit Ballon, the path leads to Metzeral and Breitenbach or to the valley of La Fecht over a mountain ridge with impressive rock formations. This rocky path at over 1110 m high stretches from the Kegelritz to the Grothkopf with the 1177 m high Steinberg in the middle. From everywhere, in addition to striking rocks, there are wonderful views in all directions of the Vosges, especially of the nearby Petit Ballon in the southeast and, in the opposite direction, of the 1,363 m high Hohneck in the northwest.

Great view, when the weather is clear you can see as far as the Black Forest.

The area in the immediate vicinity of this cross was where the fiercest fighting between the opponents took place in 1915/16 and many of the facilities here can be hiked through on marked paths. There are also many benches around the summit cross for contemplation, enjoying the view or simply resting.

From its 1272 meters high, the Petit Ballon is certainly one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Vosges massif. Its vast expanse of high stubble and the absence of adjacent summits allow it to dominate the landscape at 360°, and in particular the plain of Alsace to the east with the Black Forest in the background. The ideal place to admire the sunset, especially since several farm inns are within walking distance to enjoy a delicious marcaire meal and/or spend the night. Less touristy than the large Vosges ridge facing it, the Petit Ballon provides an authentic mountain feeling, with its Tibetan flags, its statue of the Virgin and its Vosges breed cow farms.
