At the end of the ridge, at an altitude of 443 meters, lies Ortenbourg Castle, built between 1260 and 1265 by Rudolf Habsburg and one of the most beautiful ruins in the Rhine Valley. A masterpiece of military architecture, with its high gorge surrounding a 32-meter-long dungeon, it is visible from afar and blends perfectly into the landscape. This dungeon offered six levels of defensive fire, and its pentagonal design allowed for better deflection of attackers' projectiles. The recently founded association "Les sentinelles de l'Ortenbourg" (Ortenbourg Sentinels) aims to preserve, expand, and revitalize the castle.

The tour from Dambach la ville is not too long or too difficult, and can be walked or run. However, I recommend appropriate footwear (hiking shoes, trail running shoes), as there are a few places on the descent, for which you can choose from two options, that require surefootedness. From the castle ruins you have a wonderful view over the Rhine plain to the Black Forest.

Located on the Alsace Wine Route about 6km from Sélestat, Scherwiller, the capital of Riesling, stands proudly in the heart of Piedmont. Renowned for its wines, particularly Riesling, Scherwiller has 370 hectares of vineyards, which places the village in the top three of the largest municipalities in the Bas-Rhin department in terms of wine-growing area. Come and meet the winegrowers who are passionate about their profession and who will pass on their know-how and offer you a tasting of their best vintage. The village is crossed by the Aubach, a river dotted with a hundred wash houses. The site listed since December 4, 1969 is worth a visit for a dive into history. Stroll along its quays, cross the small stone bridges and stop to discover the remains of the old wash houses where the washerwomen came to wash their clothes. In the summer, these wash houses come back to life in the theatre show on Rue des Lavandières, where scenes from rural village life are performed, in French and Alsatian. Along the Aubach, admire the typical half-timbered houses, dating from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Beautifully coloured, they are generally half-timbered for the upper floors and made of cut stone on the ground floor. A mixture of tradition and modernity that will amaze you.

The Canal du Rhône au Rhin connects more exactly the Saône, a tributary of the Rhône, to the Rhine. In Alsace, its banks have been paved from Marckolsheim to Strasbourg to allow easy cycling between the European capital and Colmar.

This medieval city is very pleasant to explore with its surrounding wall, its fortified gates and its charming alleys.
