In old documents the place was mentioned as Rodasheim (778), Rodesheim (1236), Rodisheim, villa Rotsem (13th century) and as oppidum Rodesheim (1303).

A very busy and touristy town with many wine bars and restaurants. An excellent place to spend a day.

I found it interesting that the old town was surrounded by a double fortress wall. The inner, 1,400-meter-long ring wall was intended to have approximately 20 towers and four gates. The wide earthen rampart now serves as a walking path.

The Kirchberg area is very nice!

The castle was built between 1197 and 1200 by Konrad von Landsberg to fortify the abbeys of Hohenburg, Niedermünster, and Andlau, and to serve as a refuge for Niedernaier Castle in times of danger. By the 15th century, the castle was said to have been in poor condition, and in 1632, it was completely destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. During the French Revolution, the castle, like its neighbor, Hohenburg-Andlau Castle, was sold as national property. Today, the castle, which is owned by the von Türckheim family, is undergoing extensive restoration work and excavations.

A pilgrimage site known for its chapel, built on a small hill between Rosheim and Bischoffsheim. Its origins and founder are unknown. The oldest remains date back to the 14th century, and it is unclear whether an earlier building existed there. Since the 15th century, the chapel has been dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, Saint Thiébaut, and Saint Gangolf and has become a place of pilgrimage, celebrated particularly on September 15, the commemoration of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady, and on Good Friday. In the 19th century, during the typhus epidemic, and in 1918, during the dysentery outbreak, penitential processions were organized there, attracting crowds.
