Andlau was founded in 880 by Empress Richardis. She had been banished by her husband, Emperor Charles III, and was later canonized. Her tomb in Andlau became a place of pilgrimage. According to legend, a wild bear showed her the perfect spot (Wikipedia). Wonderful Crus are produced from the vineyards here.

The motorhome stayed on the grounds of the sauerkraut factory. We cycled along quiet paths to Obernai. We really liked the town center. It has some lovely restaurants and shops. A visit to the city walls is recommended, even though they are no longer completely intact. We particularly liked the Böckler chocolatier's shop, with its many sweet treats. A visit to Obernai is highly recommended.

Bergheim is a beautiful place. For us, it's the most beautiful little place on the Wine Route. Small but perfectly formed.

3월 20, 2025, Musée du pain d'épice de Gertwiller
In Gertwiller, there's this gingerbread-decorated house! It's not the witch's house from Hansel and Gretel, but Lips, the local gingerbread maker. Gingerbread has been handcrafted in this house for 200 years. Next door is a museum dedicated to gingerbread and rural life in the past. There, you can see 8,000 objects: cake molds, pottery, tools from the past... Admission: €3 per person (2025)

The small Alsatian town of Barr is located in the French department of Bas-Rhin in the Grand Est region, just 40 kilometers from the German border. The town of 7,000 inhabitants can be reached by car in half an hour from Strasbourg and is ideal for a day trip. It takes about an hour to get to Strasbourg by train.

It was built in 1640 in Renaissance style, on the ruins of a castle. The building comprises three bodies, the main one of which is topped by a scrolled pediment and three statues representing: Justice, Temperance and Peace. In the courtyard, a very beautiful double staircase is visible. The building has had several functions: seigniorial registry, court, justice and now town hall and police station.

Impossible to cross Gertwiller without being attracted by a house reminiscent of the tale of Hansel and Gretel and decorated with gingerbread! Welcome to Lips, artisan gingerbread manufacturer. Enter and discover an extraordinary museum referring to gingerbread and the rural life of yesteryear. Michel Habsiger, passionate collector, exhibits some 10,000 objects over more than 350m²: old molds, pottery, tools from yesteryear's trades... In this house, gingerbread has been prepared by hand for 2 centuries according to jealously guarded recipes.

Video in French: https://youtu.be/mObY6FvlCxk video in german: https://youtu.be/jeLmIUBHFMU It is one of the oldest wine routes in France. At the foot of the eastern slope of the Vosges, it extends from Thann, the southern gateway to the vineyard, to Marlenheim in the north of the region, over more than 170 kilometers. Known worldwide, it contributes to the fame of Alsace wines. Here the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir and climate and spreads out on hillsides overlooking the Alsace plain in 67 communes and flower-filled villages. In this circuit, villages like Dambach, Scherwiller or Châtenois are particularly worth the detour. Visitors can venture into the heart of the vineyard via several wine trails, but be careful: during the harvest, access to these trails is regulated. Throughout the year, numerous gastronomic, cultural, artisanal and wine events are organized in the various localities along the Wine Route, such as SlowUp: https://www.slowup-alsace.fr/ or the Scherwiller gourmet walk: https://www.sentier-gourmand.com/ Cyclists will be able to discover this route via the parallel route of the Véloroute du Vignoble which takes old railway tracks, portions of the old Roman road, as well as numerous paths between the vineyards. With its 300 wine estates and around fifty great wines, the Alsace Wine Route remains the most attractive in France!

https://youtu.be/jTaovQDf2w8 Châtenois, ideally located on the Wine Route, is a fortified city with a unique charm. Two enclosures surround the town, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. Ramparts staged each year during the traditional “Fête des Remparts” in June: https://youtu.be/rzwLz2KUFqM?si=l3Y3tdG3e2hQDlfi These places are listed as Historic Monuments thanks in particular to the Witches' Tower, a 15th century Gothic tower gate located on the second enclosure; and the 18th century St Georges Church. Push open the door of the latter where you will discover one of the masterpieces of the organ builder Silbermann. From the church, walk on the interpretive trail along the ramparts then go down towards the heart of the town. Get lost in the streets and let yourself be seduced by the typical Alsatian houses where geraniums bloom on the balconies every summer. You can also explore the surrounding cycle paths during the annual Slow Up in June: https://www.slowup-alsace.fr/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVA-ytNFQmw End your walk with a visit to the cellars and stop at one of the town's good restaurants which offer different local specialties such as tarte flambée.
