Magnificent pass to climb from different slopes (Breitenbach, Steige, Vallée de la Bruche, Andlau). It is also a crossing point towards the Champ du feu, the Hohwald, the Mont Ste Odile.

Frankenbourg Castle has been officially closed since April 2025 due to rockfall. You can only get within a few hundred meters. Unfortunately, due to the dense forest, you can't see it. Instead, I recommend the southern Chateau de Saint Ulrich, which is a lovely hike from Ribeauville.

The town of Châtenois, with approximately 4,300 inhabitants, is located in the Grand Est region and belongs to the Bas-Rhin department, Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement. A wine-growing community, Châtenois lies at the foot of the Hahnenberg (530 m) in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, on the Alsace Wine Route and the EuroVelo 5 Alsace Vineyard Cycle Route. Before the town's founding, the Romans planted a chestnut forest there. The French name "Châtenois" is derived from this, and is synonymous with the original dialectal Alemannic name "Keschtaholtz" – meaning "chestnut wood" and "chestnut wood" in High German. In 1807, the village bore its current name, Châtenois. In 1871, it was Germanized as Kestenholz before reverting to its French name after the Second World War. Before the town's founding, the Romans planted a chestnut forest there. Châtenois has a beautiful old town; the main tourist street is located in Rue du Maréchal Foch.

The Saint-Georges church has preserved its powerful Romanesque bell tower with twin bays. Its crowning with four corner watchtowers dates from 1530, made entirely of chestnut wood, and was probably used as a lookout. The nave and chancel were built in 1759 and have virtually original furnishings. To see in particular inside: - The Silbermann organ from 1765, very little altered, classified and restored in 1973, - The very beautiful processional cross in rosewood veneered and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, dated 1763, coming from the Franciscan convent of Sélestat, - An incomplete Holy Sepulcher from the end of the 15th century: the dead Christ is lying on a slab and three holy women are standing behind him in a painful attitude. Two guards accompany the whole, - Tombstones of bailiffs of Châtenois (from the 16th to the 18th century). - Four polychrome paintings in relief, strongly inspired by the engravings of Albrecht Dürer. Two of them, made around 1520, are integrated into the altarpieces of the secondary altars of the 18th century: the Assumption and the coronation of the Virgin, the birth of the Virgin.
