The Château de la Garnache was an imposing 13th-century defensive complex at the heart of a very important seigneury that included Challans and Beauvoir-sur-Mer, extending as far as the Île d'Yeu and Noirmoutier. It was one of the strongholds of the Marches of Brittany, owned by the lords of Clisson, notably Gilles de Rais. Today, only the moat, visible from the road, and two towers stand in the middle of a park accessible by stairs.

This pretty little village offers a rich heritage with its chapel built during the Vendée War. The Domaine des Iles suggests a gourmet break to discover the local wine (IGP Val de Loire). There is also a municipal campsite and a grocery store in the center.

Beautiful church rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century in the neo-Romanesque style. Unfortunately no water tap in the public toilets. Nor those of the town hall, for that matter. If the town hall of La Garnache reads me...

The Château de la Caraterie dates from the 19th century. But, it replaces an older building burned down in 1832 during one of the last skirmishes of the attempted uprising of the Duchess of Berry. Because the Duchess had decided to raise the country against Louis Philippe (dynasty of Orleans), wanting to depose him, and carry his son (dynasty of Bourbons, legitimists) on the throne of king of France.

Built from the 13th century by the lords of Retz, the castle of Machecoul was one of the main fortresses of the Marches de Bretagne, a region which went from Pornic to Clisson and Tiffauges via the Breton marshes. These strongholds were notably held by the famous Gilles de Rais, companion of Joan of Arc who inspired the myth of Bluebeard. The building is now very much in ruins: only the exterior walls of the keep and a section of interior wall remain, visible from the road, because it is located in the heart of a private domain and only accessible via a guided tour.
