This work of art entitled "Catène de Containers" simply cannot be overlooked. Both the size of the object with the two interlocking arches and the bright colors make it an involuntary eye-catcher. This installation was created by Vincent Ganivet, and the reason for its construction was a proud event in 2017: the 500th anniversary of the port of Le Havre.

The Sainte-Catherine quay runs around the old docks and is lined with tall, narrow half-timbered houses with colorful awnings. It is Honfleur's restaurant mile.

The Sainte Catherine church with the free-standing tower is on Place Ste. Catherine. It was built entirely out of wood by ship carpenters in the middle of the 15th century with two twin ships and a roof structure similar to ship hulls and equipped with painted glass windows and other works of art. The church is listed as a historical monument in the Base Mérimée of the French Ministry of Culture. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honfleur

Catène de Container is a sculpture in Le Havre, France. The sculpture is prominently located near the entrance to the port of Le Havre. Created in 2017 by Vincent Ganivet to mark the port's 500th anniversary, it consists of colored shipping containers arranged in two arches. One of the arches, composed of 21 containers, is high and steep, bridging a smaller flat arch composed of 15 containers. The shape and color of the containers give the impression of using large building blocks. The sculpture weighs a total of 288 tons and reaches a height of 28.5 meters. It manages without supports and uses the principle of the catenary used by the architect Antoni Gaudí, whereby the forces and tensions within a chain are used for support. The name Catène de Container goes back to the Latin word Catène for chain and means something like container chain in German. It is a double allusion to the construction principle used in the chain and to the supply chain, which also includes the containers and ultimately the port. The inauguration took place on May 27, 2017. Due to its unusual shape, size and striking location, the sculpture quickly became a landmark in Le Havre. The Catène of containers weighs a total of nearly 288 tons, and its highest point reaches 28.5 meters. The title, borrowed from the Latin word “catena”, also means “chain”. It should be seen as a nod to the technique used, inspired by Antoni Gaudi, but also to the use of containers in the “supply chain”. This work benefited from the support of Vinci Construction and its subsidiary GTM Normandie Centre.
