This was the city residence of the Pierre de Brens family from the 13th to the 15th century. From the courtyard you can see the magnificent mullioned windows and some gargoyles.

The religious wars devastated the churches of Gaillac. The toll was very high for the abbey and in the middle of the 16th century it was destroyed. The abbots of Saint-Michel worked on the restoration of the abbey church in the 17th and 18th centuries. A huge task! The revolution of 1789 led to the looting of the abbey again. The abbey became a warehouse, a storage facility and a saltpeter factory. In the 19th century, as part of the restoration, the nave was given a neoclassical look, the walls were painted with trompe l'oeil and in 1849 a neo-Romanesque portal was added to the west façade.
