On the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise, in the heart of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, stands a keep with twin towers. Formerly surrounded by an enclosure of approximately 700 square meters, it is today located in the city center of Niort, a stone's throw from the very beautiful Halles, designed by Eiffel. The keep, built between the 12th and 13th century, has had several functions. A military fortress, it was also a prison and finally a museum. In 1840, it became the first building in Niort to be classified as a Historic Monument.

An evening round after the hard work shot 12km in 2h in wonderful weather in short clothes and sandals. The historical buildings, the watercourses and the variety inspired me!

Started by Henri II, completed by Richard Coeur de Lion, this extraordinary castle does not seem out of place in the center of Niort, but of course it occupied a very strong position in the valley. Having received this region of France as a gift through his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, he used this castle as his capital to defend it.

The Royal Abbey of Celles-sur-Belle dates from the 11th century and was an important stopover for pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. During the period of the French Revolution, the abbey was sold as national property and used as a place of detention during the Vendée wars.

The town has also been awarded the "Ville en poésie" (Poetry City) label, and you'll certainly have the opportunity to read a few poems during your stroll!

Great place, steeped in history. Not to be missed when passing through Deux-Sèvres.

The Dungeon of Niort is one of the city's most famous buildings. It was part during its construction of a set of ramparts almost 2,700 meters long, which protected the city. Nowadays, the keep of Niort is accompanied by a museum which traces the history of this city of character.

The city is beautiful and the walk is nice. Chauray appeared in the history written in 904 (charter of the abbey of Saint-Maixent), under the name of vicaria calriacince. It is a town that once belonged to someone named Caurus or Calirus, whose name, supplemented by the suffix "acum", has evolved to eventually give "Chauray". The coat of arms of the town is that of Jacques Chalmot, Lord of Deffends, who, having embraced the Reformed religion, had to emigrate to Holland.
