Bordered by the Vendée river for 15 km and on the edge of the Massif Forestier de Mervent / Vouvant, the town of Foussais-Payré offers a quality space where you can discover the bocage, the water, the forest and a rich heritage. Every 2 years, at the end of July, sculptors come from all over France and even beyond to work for 4 days in public to give new life to trees: the Foussais-Payré Chainsaw Sculpture Symposium! Next edition in 2024.

The right plant, the right place. This tree defends itself against this dovecote and it wins! A sight to see.

Labeled a small town of character, Foussais-Payré is a village dominated by Renaissance architecture. The town reached its peak there thanks to the flourishing activity of clothiers, tanners and weavers, of which there are still many buildings and period houses. The fate of the village of Faymoreau changed in 1827 when a modest clog maker discovered a seam of coal while digging a well. This discovery leads, two kilometers from the original village, the construction and then the development of a small mining town with its settlements, its management building (now the mining hotel, and now a restaurant), its chapel, its school, its allotment gardens, etc. People from here and elsewhere come to settle there to work in the mine. The exploitation of the deposit stops in 1958. The traces of this past remain with in particular the chapel of the Minors which was restored and redecorated with magnificent stained glass windows designed by the artist Carmelo Zagari.
