The origin of the Butte des Élus is mysterious. It is a mound erected by the hands of man which dates from the Iron Age. The statue of the Virgin was erected later, in gratitude for the protection of the village of Mézières-Lez-Cléry during the war of 1870. A legend says that the young women who pass seven times under the arch which supports this statue, without laughing or smiling, are guaranteed to find a husband or fertility.
