The Porte d’Ardon is one of the medieval city gates of Laon. The current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally, this gate was called “Porte Royée” because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon. The gate consists of a châtelet with a portcullis and used to have doors. There was also a barbican, but this has now disappeared. Under the gate there was a fountain and wash houses, some of which still exist. The Porte d’Ardon was classified as a historical monument in 1909.

Here, the city walker will find an early masterpiece of Gothic architecture, a style often found in this part of France – Chartres and Reims, for example, attract enthusiastic international visitors and are far more famous than Laon. In the following 13th century, many Gothic churches were built, not only in their country of origin, France, but also beyond the country's borders, where this sky-high, light-filled architectural style was now in great demand for new churches (for example, the laying of the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral in 1248).

Loan is a medieval town on a mesa. A trip is very worthwhile! I would always prefer visiting Reims.

The cathedral stands in the old town of Laon on Table Mountain and can be seen from afar. The detailed front and the balanced proportions make the building worth seeing from the outside. But you should definitely take your time and look inside one of the earliest Gothic masterpieces. The feeling of space in the light-flooded church is amazing. There are many side chapels, beautiful stained glass windows, remains of the interior painting and much more to admire. We were thrilled!

It was called the royal gate because of its proximity to the royal palace of Laon. It is a double door, it consists of a gate with a portcullis, and had leaves. It was preceded by a barbican which has now disappeared. The gate is attested from the 10th century but the current structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. A gate was built in front of it in 1741: sculpted by Charles Hottin, it had pillars topped with lions and representations of the arms of France. It was destroyed in 1858. Below the door were a fountain and wash houses: the only ones remaining today, they were covered in the 19th century. With the historic fortified old town on a table mountain, Laon has the largest contiguous protected area in France. Laon was already a Gallic fortress in the 5th century.
