Before that, for many years, the waterwheel, or later a diesel engine and electricity, ensured that local farmers had their grain ground. The adjacent mill pond was also busy in the old days, when Twistringen residents would go swimming or ice skating there.

The monastery mill in Bassum When the monastery was founded in 858, a water mill must have been built on the monastery stream. The first documented mention in 1604 can be found in the monastery archive. The current mill building was demolished in 1881 by the abbess v. Issendorff built. The monastery miller was responsible for the operation, he had three ponds and was also able to dam the monastery stream to get more water for the milling operation. In 1938 a Francis shaft turbine was installed and the mill was also equipped with a power generator. When the milling operation was no longer worthwhile, fodder grain was still crushed until 1964 and the mill was then shut down. The state of Lower Saxony withdrew the traffic jam right at this point in time! In 1998, the city of Bassum was given back the right to dam in order to build a new weir and the necessary fish slide. Only then was it possible to restore and reactivate the decommissioned Francis shaft turbine as part of a diploma thesis at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences and a design office. It now has a rated output of 10 KW and is used to generate environmentally friendly energy.
