A small town with a great history. The village owes its existence to the Grande Levée d'Anjou, which was built over the centuries to counter the river's flooding. The rise of the Loire navy later transformed Saint-Clément-des-Levées into a real boatmen's village. Like most of the communes of Saumur on the right bank of the Loire, Saint-Clément-des-Levées remained virtually uninhabited until the construction of a first earth and stone dike in the 12th century. In 1505, the construction of a chapel dedicated to Saint Clement, patron saint of sailors, gave the village its new name. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the maritime industry in the Loire Valley reached its peak. At that time, Saint-Clément-des-Levée had no fewer than seven ports and concentrated a significant part of the river trade in the region. Boatmen added to the village population and many houses in the town were built during this period. These beautiful tuff stone houses with slate roofs are sometimes built on the dike: the ground floor is at the foot of the dike, while the first floor overlooks the road. In the mid-19th century, the old Saint-Clément chapel, which had become too small, was replaced by the current church. Very nice operation. Definitely worth recommending. Situated on the Loire near a beach and many lawns where you can relax. Perfect place to replenish your burnt sugars.

Nice smooth ride

The V44 follows a shaded path in a wooded area. This segment is very pleasant for the walk.

The Grand'Maison manor is on the list of historical monuments, particularly for its roof, its facades and the turret of the staircase. It was built in the 16th century in an architectural style of the Angevine Renaissance type. It is now privately owned.
