Aigues-Mortes is a magnificent fortified city built in the 13th century by Louis IX who wanted to have a port on the Mediterranean without passing through Italian cities, particularly for the Crusades. Before this fortification and the creation of a large port, the town was mainly a village of fishermen and salt workers, the surrounding marshes and ponds having been exploited since the Neolithic period.
