It is – contrary to the place name Sanint-Brieuc – Saint Stephen, under whose patronage this magnificent cathedral is dedicated. "Saint-Étienne" is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem church and, according to the biblical accounts in the "New Testament," is also the first martyr (blood witness) of early Christianity. The church commemorates his death on Boxing Day, December 26th. When Stephen recounted his vision of the open heavens, "And he, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

Today, La Grève des Courses is part of the GR34, a coastal hiking trail that allows you to discover all of Brittany’s coasts. From here, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Anse d’Yffiniac. The area is also home to mussel farms, known as “bouchots”, which are a local specialty. The Réserve Naturelle de La Baie de Saint-Brieuc itself is the largest nature reserve in Brittany.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, La Grève des Courses was a festive place where horse races and aviation meetings took place. However, it later became a wild dump where waste was thrown directly onto the sand, polluting the bay. Thanks to the efforts of environmental associations, it was transformed into a nature reserve.

The Pont des Courses is a metal bridge that spans the Gouët river, between the Cesson district in Saint-Brieuc and the Grèves de Langueux. It was built in 1905 by Louis Auguste Harel de La Noë, an engineer who carried out numerous works for the Côtes-du-Nord railways. The Pont des Courses is 40 meters long and has a single arch of 12 meters. It passes under an arch of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de l’Ouest bridge, which connects Saint-Brieuc to the port of Légué. The Pont des Courses has been listed as a Historic Monument since July 2018. It was rehabilitated in 2020, after being closed for several years for security reasons. The Pont des Courses is part of the cycle path of the strikes, which runs along the Gouët river and offers a panorama of the bay of Saint-Brieuc.

Street art in Saint-Brieuc is an urban art that has transformed the city center into an open-air gallery. For several years, the Just Do Paint festival has invited local and international artists to create monumental frescoes on the walls of the city, using different techniques and influences1. You can admire more than 70 works of street art by following a route that will introduce you to varied and original styles, such as the Kingfishers of Kat & Action, the Gargoyle of Mr Blob, the Bretonne of Hopare or the Star of 'Love. Street art in Saint-Brieuc is also a way to express messages about the environment, solidarity, diversity or Breton culture. You can also appreciate the contrast between street art and the Art Deco architecture of certain buildings, such as the chapel of the Maison Saint-Yves or the theater La Passerelle.
